Review:
As a hockey playing Canadian, this movie was AWESOME. It now gave me three hockey movies that I will love forever. The other two being Slap Shot & Mystery, Alaska. (There are a few that have honourable mentions, but those are the big 3 in my opinion). Now for non-hockey loving Canadians or even non-Canadians, I'm fairly certain that there is a moderate chance you will at least like most of this movie. Sure maybe it's full of senseless hockey violence & blood & gore. But it really delivers a lot of laughs, most of which are physical humour, but there is enough jokes to make you laugh throughout. The characters are very likeable especially Seann William Scott's character. Loosely based on a true story, he shows that not all hockey "goons" are muscled up idiots just looking to hurt people. Liev Schreiber portrats the aging veteran enforcer who's final battle builds towards a showdown with new comer Doug Glatt. He's very funny & does a great job as a antagonist you want to cheer for. Supporting cast is good even thought they are all unknown actors, maybe a few you might recognize from small roles here & there, but it's most fresh faces. You have some good hockey cliches, like a crazy goaltender who has pre-game ticks & superstitions. You have the stereotypical Russian players who's broken English & mispronounced words add to the comedy. The old veteran, the hard ass coach, the rebellious superstar who is playing for himself but then learns to be a "team player". It's all there. It has tons of iconic Canadian cameos including all three of the Trailer Park Boys as well as Fubar star David Lawrence (Terry) in an uncredited role as Doug's gay brother's boyfriend. Also cameo appearance by Nicholas Campbell who was the star of Canadian drama/crime show Da Vinci's Inquest from 1998-2005. Also appearing is former NHL tough guy George Laraque. Overall it's a good comedy, a funny sports film but I could see why some people might not like it. Although don't be afraid to give it a view just because it's a hockey movie. It's still very funny.
