Review:
The Girl without the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace is the lead role, playing a researcher heading to the planet to discover the ancient history of the aliens who created human kind. She is very convincing as the heroine bringing a good mix of powerful emotions but also a great sense of desperation, panic & fear. I will say however that at points you could hear her slight accent jump out & then disappear. Michael Fassbender is the busiest man in show business, it feels like he's in everything I see. He is out standing as "David" the artificial being used as Weyland's eyes & ears. He has a good blend of humanistic qualities but also of an obeying cybernetic being that isn't fully human. Charlize Theron does a great job as the ship commander & leader of the research trip. Pretty powerful lead actors, do a lot of justice to the story.
The supporting cast is pretty much just lambs being lead to slaughter. Cannon fodder. Pretty much as you would expect from a horror/sci fi film. They all have small roles & nothing too memorable. Other than Idris Elba who is the cowboy taking the mission on his back once it goes wrong. Guy Pearce may be unrecognizable playing old man Weyland, barely able to walk on his own. His performance was a little out there & very weird. It goes along the same lines as most outer space exploration films involving mysteries of the universe, new discoveries & realizing that we aren't the most intelligent beings in the universe. It had a very Mission To Mars feel to it. Go to another planet, discover technology beyond our wildest dreams. Realize that we are considered a cancer to the rest of the universe. Very well done, probably the best visual effects of the past few years. There was nothing that made it look bad or poorly done plus the fact that you have to digitally make aliens, space ships & atmosphere. It was very visually pleasing. The sets that were built of the inside of the ships were incredibly futuristic, well sculpted & had very vivid colours, patterns & a well made layout. It was very entertaining, it also kept you guessing the whole film, even if you figured out something very earlier on. If you can figure out the little (or not so little secret) early on, it's going to make you extremely excited, or at least it should make you excited assuming you like something else. Maybe it's something you've really wanted forever. Not really a whole lot of comedic release, just a whole lot of nonstop action & intensity. It had a very weird & interesting choice of soundtrack. For something so intense & somewhat erie, it sure did have an upbeat & almost goofy soundtrack. I've always felt that a soundtrack plays a major role in the production of a film, almost as much as plot & acting. I was almost expecting a Weezer song to play. Not really the best choice of soundtrack, but it's not always relevant. There is an incredible sequence featuring a computerized medical procedure machine that is used to perform surgery in case of an in space emergency. We'll the machine may or may not get used for a different procedure in the course of the film. Incredibly gross yet incredibly fucking awesome!!
