Review:
A very great, legitimate horror film that even after all of this time still holds up due to it's great cast of legendary actors, it's revolutionary special effects for the era & intensity that I'm sure had people of the time wondering what was out there. It was the very first major on screen role for Sigourney Weaver. I can only imagine how intimidating it was for her to have to step right into what would become one of the greatest lead woman in a horror film roles of all time. But even though she was new to the industry she really pulls it out big time. The supporting cast is filled out by some great actors lead by John Hurt & Ian Holm, both now known as old men actors who play smaller cameo roles (Holm as Bilbo Baggins in The LOTR Triolgy & Hurt as the human vessel of Zeus in Immortals). Comedic relief although in a very small & sometimes unintentional manner is supplied by Harry Dean Stanton & in an angry, shoot first ask questions later, early stereotypical black man role Yaphet Kotto. The plot does take quite a while to kick in, so you do have to sit through a little bit of early nothingness to get to the good stuff. Has a very powerful climax & but it does begin to get predictable for the final few scenes. Now how about the fact that Weaver is a TOTAL babe especially for it being the 1970's & having a ridiculous hair style. But she honestly must have weighed under 100lbs back in 1979 because she is all bones & nothing else. Overall it is easily one of my favourite movies of all time & watching it on blu ray really makes it all that much better. Little added note, Tom Skerritt was originally the main lead but later it was changed to Weaver.
