Synopsis:
Originally planned as a silly
vehicle for Chris Farley, in the hands of director Ben Stiller and star
Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy became an opportunity for Carrey to flex some
of his darker comedic muscles as stalker Chip Douglas. Matthew Broderick
plays Steven, an average Joe who is forlorn over his recent breakup
with girlfriend Robin (Leslie Mann). When he moves into a new apartment,
Steven comes in contact with Chip, who shows up to hook up the cable.
Before he knows it, and whether he likes it or not, Steven has a new
best-friend in the obnoxious and clingy Chip. However, Steven soon
learns that obnoxious is a walk in the park compared to Chip's behavior
when Steven tells him he doesn't want to be his pal anymore. What's
worse, no one -- including Robin or his family -- believes Steven when
he accuses the seemingly harmless Chip of being a malevolent menace.
George Segal and Jack Black also star along with Stiller, who plays
twins loosely-based on the Menendez brothers.
Review:
Boldest statement I have ever made: The most underrated comedy of all time. I know a lot of people hated this movie, I'm going to assume because most people looked at it compared to every other Jim Carey film. Goofy, over the top & slap sticky etc. The on screen chemistry between Broderick & Carey is incredible. They both feed off each other with incredible comedic timing. This is probably the best acting role that Carey has ever done. They are surrounded by a great comedic supporting cast. This might be the movie I least hate Jack Black in, probably because it's so early in his career that he hadn't developed his scating or falling down routine yet. George Segal is great, you even get a small cameo by Bob Odenkirk (of Breaking Bad fame). Now this might have my favourite B storyline ever. The TV courtroom drama of the Sweet brothers (played by director Ben Stiller) is the most hilarious side story of any movie I have ever seen. Add onto that the made for TV movie during the trail where they are portrayed by Eric Roberts. Comedy gold. There is nothing to dislike about this movie unless you dislike fucking great acting & Jim Carey. People really need to understand Dark Comedy. I was surprised how much it made domestically in the box office. At the same time surprised how big of a budget it had.
