Director:
Ronald F. Maxwell (Gods & Generals)
Synopsis:
The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The
Killer Angels by Michael Shaara becomes this sprawling historical epic.
As in Shaara's novel, director Ronald Maxwell focuses on a handful of
major players to dramatize the events of July 1863, when the armies of
the Union and Confederacy clash at the small Pennsylvania town of the
title. Among them are Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee, who
disagrees with his top advisor, General James Longstreet (Tom Berenger)
over battle strategy, and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence
Chamberlain, a college professor whose unorthodox techniques save the
day (and possibly the war) for his beleaguered army.
Review:
Epic. Well filmed. Jeff Daniels is incredible. Now keep in mind you might need to cancel all of your other plans for the day because this one runs from 2h34m in the theatrical cut, or if your like me & watched the directors cut runs 3h5m. From what I understand this movie has every single small detail about the battle & everything leading up to it because it was produced by Mr. TNT, Ted Turner who is a huge civil war nut. Very long, there are parts where there is too much dialogue that leads to nothing. Every general & majors thoughts on every strategic battle does at times make it hard to stay interested. But once the actual battle happens its not bad at all. Didn't realized how much I enjoy Civil War related stuff.
